"As a studio potter, I make work that is meant to be used daily. Working in a cyclical fashion, I have been able to explore the subtleties of form, decoration, and firing in an attempt to capture an essence not easily put into words." Peter Karner?s decoration is inspired by geometric patterns found in Navajo eye-teaser weavings, textiles, and landscapes. Of primary interest are the optical illusion and depth inherent in his inspirations. He is fascinated by the way one pattern can morph into other patterns, allowing the eye to experience multiple perspectives.
Form is of great importance in Karner?s work. While he creates relatively tight pots, it is his intention to imbue them with fluidity and animation. Ultimately, Karner believes form and function must coalesce to engender a successful piece.
Karner?s current body of work is functional stoneware fired to cone 10 (23300 F) in a reduction atmosphere. Although most pieces are wheel thrown and altered, he also makes hand-built serving trays in various sizes and shapes. Much of Karner?s decoration is achieved by layering different glazes using brushwork, wax resist, and liquid latex.
