I strive to create simple, but compelling images in such a way that we see the commonplace anew. I often choose “simple” scenes that when drawn or painted will leave room for the play of the materials, in most cases soft pastels, sometimes acrylic or oil paint. I also look for lighting conditions—seasons, times of day, etc., that might have emotional appeal. Choosing the right scene also involves assessing the formal elements within the scene so that the finished composition has something graphically compelling about it.
