I've tried to take a unique approach to basketry, long considered a practical craft, and move it more in the direction of fine art. My pieces are as likely to be sculptural as vessel-like, and one of my goals is to have them appreciated as both. All of my baskets are worked using a coiled method that both frames the myriad objects suspended in their centers but additionally creates paths for the viewers eyes to follow in and around each piece. The pine needles I use in many of my baskets are collected from all over California, both from city streets and parks as well as the foothills of the Sierras. Each piece has at their core a tenriffe which can contain carved jade or polished stones, rough wood burls or found metal objects.
